Host Monitoring The host monitoring directory contains software that monitors the operations of a computer and reports on / responds to any interruptions to the services that the machine provides. Many operating systems contain inbuilt process accounting features, and are therefore not featured here. o angel Angel is a simple yet useful tool to monitor the services on your network. Technically speaking, it's a Perl program that runs every 'n' minutes (usually fired from your cron) and calls different perl subprograms (referred to as "plugins") to do the actual testing. It will then generate an HTML table containing the status of your network. o autostatus Autostatus is a network and server monitoring program. It is designed to support large, arbitrarily complex networks of computers, and still provide feedback in a very timely fashion. To that extent, it has the following goals: Speed - Autostatus attempts to probe for network status as quickly as possible. Efficiency - Autostatus will not attempt to check for status on portions of the network it already knows are down, eliminating redundant checks. Accuracy - Autostatus presents as accurate a picture of the network status as it can from its perspective. o MARS / SPOTS MARS is the Monitoring Application for Resources and Servers. SPOTS is Something Placed On That System. MARS provides network-based monitoring of services, and together they provide free disk space, memory and load average information for hosts. o mon mon is a general-purpose resource monitoring system, which can be used to monitor network service availability, server problems, environmental conditions such as the temperature in a room, or any number of things. o nettest nettest is a Perl script which tests the integrity of a net connection. If the connection is down, it will either beep the speaker, send email, write in the system logs, or all of the above. Note this is completely different from the standard 'network tester' programs in that it is not meant to test the machines or services of any computers on the network, but rather to ensure that the physical network connection is intact. o PIKT PIKT is a system monitor whose primary task is to warn of problems, and when configured to do so, fix them. PIKT is designed to manage large networks, working in a "master" and "many slaves" configuration. o SMS Client SMS Client is a UNIX command line utility which allows you to send SMS messages to mobile phones and pagers. This software has been written and tested on Linux however a number of users have reported success running under both AIX and Solaris. SMS Client currently supports a wide variety of services providers and protocols, including TAP, PageOne, CIMD, SNPP. o spong Spong is a simple systems and network monitoring package. It does not compete with Tivoli, OpenView, UniCenter, or any other commercial packages. It is not SNMP based, it communcates via simple TCP based messages. It is written in Perl. It can currently run on every major Unix and Unix-like operating systems. o Swatch Swatch is designed to monitor system activity. When configured, Swatch will watch for a particular pattern of activity, and perform a specified action in response to it. o Swatch SysWatch is a CGI to display current information about your UNIX system. It can display drive partitions, drive use, as well as resource hogs, and what current users are doing. It is quite customizable.
